From one day to the next, toilet paper became a symbol of special significance. An ordinary object that protected us from the pandemic during the state of emergency (ownership of dozens of toilet paper rolls enhanced our security) and helped us to ease our crave for shopping as well.
As we flatten the curve, the number of new cases is still increasing worldwide. Borders open and close, hotspots disappear and re-form.
It’s time to look back and digest what happened to us before the second wave comes. How did we behave and how did we wear it? What did we learn from the last three months?
During the five-hour walk, the toilet paper rolls are outside their natural habitat as a reminder for passer-by to gently ask them to reflect how they dealt with pandemic.
Are we ready for taking a second?
Imre Vass is an independent performing artist, dancer and choreographer, based in Budapest. He is interested in creating performative and contemplative situations where both spectators and performers have space to reflect on their actual physical, social and psychological states, roles and positions.
His works include taking place (2015) which was nominated for the best contemporary dance performance of the year (Laban prize) and STANDING GROUND (2017) supported by the Staféta program. With Dávid Somló he created it comes it goes (2013) and IITTHHOONN (2019) which was nominated for the best experimental theatre piece (Péter Halász prize).
He is a member of DEEPER F. Collective operating on the Budapest – Berlin axis and he is also a member of iCoDaCo (2018-2020) and created it will come later and toured internationally. The book PUSH – it will come later was released on the 30th of June, 2020.
After finishing the Budapest Contemporary Dance School (2007), he worked with Ultima Vez (BE), United Sorry (A\NL) Rapid Eye (DK) and Ingri Fiksdal (NO) and Hungarian companies such as HODWORKS, The Symptoms, Artus, Márta Ladjánszki and STEREO Akt.
