PLACCC launched Sensing the City in 2021, inviting artists to respond to pressing environmental and ecological challenges through experimental micro-interventions in public space. The site-specific projects at various locations across Budapest are always accompanied by thematic discussions.
“The city unfolds itself through our senses. We explore our environment, its rhythm, atmosphere and texture, but also its current state and the impact of our individual and social practices on the environment through sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. As such, in the projects of Sensing the City, the term “sensing” has a double meaning, as it refers to both the physical perception of the city (the reaction of the body) and the active sensitization of urban locations with the presence of the body.”

Just like in the previous years, the projects presented in the program were selected through an anonymous open call. We invited proposals for small-scale artistic projects that engage both the human and more-than-human participants of urban life, address urban ecological and ecopolitical issues through different sensory experiences, and explore alternative practices and possible futures.
Through the interventions in public space and the accompanying thematic discussions, the program aims to make the complex processes of the climate and ecological crisis more tangible and accessible by grounding them in concrete, everyday experiences.
