Rita Hoofwijk (NL): Danu

Rita Hoofwijk is a Dutch artist affiliated at SoAP – Space oriented Artistic Practice. Her work takes place in various locations and contexts and attentively explores these spaces that define her practice. What emerges is site-specific work of varying form and scale, from spatial installation to audio and text. Earlier works of her were performed in musea, on city squares, inside the train, at the edge of a protected nature reserve and near the waterfront. This time she invites us at the riverbanks.

From the Black Forest to the Black Sea, the river flows.
The river flows and meets a city on its way.
When the Danube’s waters reach Budapest, they are a little over halfway through their journey. They take ten days to reach us, and in another ten days, they will mingle with the salty waters of the sea.
The river has been making this journey for over a million of years and has seen Budapest many times.
‘Danu’ is translated as ‘the flowing one’ or as ‘she who came before everything else.’

Usually in the evening, people take a seat at the stairs along the river. They watch the Sun setting and reflect upon their day. They bring their thoughts to the river and clear their heads.
We will meet in the morning and in the daytime, when the stairs and our heads are still empty or less full – to hear what the river has to say, to see if the river longs to speak.
It will take us 25 steps.

This performance uses mp3, earplugs, water and a pinch of salt.
