PLACCC Winter Edition

When we think of art in public space, winter months rarely come to mind. Yet more and more artists are exploring the possibilities of outdoor creation during the winter. As part of our first-ever PLACCC Winter Edition, we present projects by four Hungarian artists and collectives that explore the physical and mental experience of cold, climate change, self-care, and wellbeing. The programs mostly take place outdoors and in public spaces, offering our audience a different (cold) experience of the city.

Empowermental (formerly Ziggurat Project) invites you to a walking performance in the city. Created in collaboration with ImagineBudapest, External Spaces, Internal Feelings encourages you to explore the sensations and bodily reactions experienced in urban space, examining the dynamics between the built environment and emotions and bodily sensations in order to better understand how the city shapes our physical and mental well-being.

Kinga Szemessy and Eszter Mórocz are professional performers and trained masseurs, so it is not surprising that their unconventional “massage performance” called Where does it hurt? explores the boundaries of these two areas: in the participatory performance, they thematize the issues of care, vulnerability and virtuosity / expertise, while two spectators receive a treatment combining Swedish and Thai massage techniques and object theater elements.

SVUNG Research Group‘s participatory performance Cold Comfort reflects on the somatic experience of cold: the audio-driven, immersive work shares the experience of extreme cold with the audience through expert interviews on the one hand and the physical experience of the dynamics of cold and heat on the other.

Dávid Somló’s latest performance, Glissando, is an innovative, participatory sound choreography for skating spectators, which combines minimalist choreography, spatial sound experience and interactive audience involvement. Participants – who don’t necessarily have to be experienced skaters – together create a dynamic, constantly changing spatial experience on the ice using 30 portable speakers.
