Unreal State is an immersive walking performance through the city, guided by an app on our phones. Participants navigate a digital map overlaid onto actual city locations, transforming the urban environment into both stage and game board.
The piece invites participants to move through streets, buildings, thresholds, and public spaces while listening to a voice that gradually reveals the existence of another territory: an unreal state layered on top of the world we already know and inhabit. This digital layer does not replace the city but reorganizes how we perceive, navigate, desire within, and make decisions through it.
Between speculative fiction, urban walk, and intimate audio guide, Unreal State explores the contradictory role of surveyance and digital technologies in contemporary life: systems and devices that connect us while isolating us, guide us while tracking us, and offer us agency while quietly shaping the conditions under which our choices are made. What begins as a personal journey through the city becomes a critical reflection on the systems that increasingly mediate everyday life, democratic institutions, collective imagination, and the fragile distinction between participation and control.
Can we get back our agency over our decisions while we are gradually exposed to the system’s closed nature?
The performance does not ask the audience to escape into the screen. Instead, it uses the screen to send them back into the city: to look at its surfaces, its infrastructures, its strangers, and the invisible systems that operate above, beneath, and around them.
Please bring a fully charged smartphone, headphones or earphones, make sure that you have a mobile internet access and you can enable GPS/location services and browser permissions, and we recommend wearing comfortable footwear suitable for walking through the city.
