FEMINI: Stories Carried by Our Waters – hydrofeminist salon, 21 September 2025

In the frame of the transdisciplinary hydrofeminist workshop by FEMINI, together, we will deep dive into the possibilities offered by hydrofeminism, focusing on rivers, specifically the Danube. What kind of river would you be? Where is your source, what nourishes you, and where do you meander? When do you overflow and flood the surrounding villages? What sediments do you carry with you?

The role of bodies of water surrounding us goes beyond biology; they seep into our culture, our songs, our celebrations, saturate our image of community, and flood our rituals. What happens when we become aware of this interconnectedness? What can we learn from rivers and from the discovery of our own watery being?

We envision a fluid space, a venue for community-based, research-driven knowledge sharing. Here, within the theme of eco-consciousness, we do not primarily focus on problems and urgent dangers, but instead represent a solution-oriented approach: using the post-anthropocene and poetic approach of hydrofeminism, we provide space where participants can imagine a livable and sustainable life through creation.

Among the invitations, you will find lecture-style elements (introduction to hydrofeminism, the ecological dangers and social role of the Danube) and artistic, creative practices (score-based performative installation, creative writing, storytelling).

The program is a continuation of the creative process of the community theatre performance titled ‘Stories Carried by Old Waters’ (A víz viszi tovább), which premiered in Hungary in September 2024. The performance was created and presented together with a group of senior women on the banks of the Danube as part of the PLACCC festival. The working method and practice of the creative process were developed during a residency in August, 2023 at the Divadlo na Cucky theatre in the Czech Republic.

What is Hydrofeminism?

According to the post-anthropocene worldview of ecofeminism, the hierarchies and structures that drive the neoliberal, capitalist world support the disconnection from both members of oppressed groups and from nature. Along this theory, within the endeavors of intersectional feminism, we must also consider other-than-human interests to understand and dismantle oppressive structures.

Hydrofeminism is a philosophical movement that falls under ecofeminism, with water at its center. In the water cycle, the same atoms have been circulating since times dating back to before life on Earth. Every drop of water we consume, which sustains our life functions and becomes part of us, connects us to all geographical and geological landscapes it has passed through, and to every living and non-living element of them. Understanding and experiencing this interconnectedness not only helps us to see ourselves as part of nature but also to look at issues affecting our society from a different angle, gaining a new perspective for building a sustainable future.

About Us:

We graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts in 2020, writing our theses on community creation and score-based participatory performances. We became creative partners during our university years. Our applied theatre projects explore new forms of participation, socially engaged arts, and non-hierarchical methods of creation, often using non-verbal tools. We believe that involving non-professional artists in the creative process not only creates an opportunity for self-reflection and self-expression but also introduces valuable new aesthetics and perspectives into the contemporary art canon.

A photo and audio recording will be made at the event. By participating in the event, the participant gives his/her consent to the recording and publication of his/her appearance and expressions.
