(Un)Real Estate Agency is an imaginary real estate agency: unreal, precisely. It is an artistic intervention disguised as a commercial enterprise, deliberately blurring the line between fiction and reality. A playful participatory experience which, at the same time, offers a sharp critique of a housing system – in Italy, in Hungary or elsewhere – that has become so absurd it has lost any meaningful connection with reality.
Visitors entering the (Un)Real Estate Agency browse a series of property listings that are surreal, but not entirely implausible. They are given an imaginary purchasing power, which they can use in different kinds of auctions that are anything but judicial. Through this experience, they uncover the structural contradictions and inequalities at the heart of today’s housing system. an reveal some of the mechanisms that has shifted the home into the realm of finance and speculation, increasingly stripping it of its status as a fundamental right.
In the local adaptation of the participatory performance, we collaborated with Hungarian organisations that engage daily with the housing crisis and the search for effective responses to it.
