Eszter Mórocz – Kinga Szemessy: Where does it hurt?

Kinga Szemessy and Eszter Mórocz, trained performers and masseurs, explore the boundaries of these two areas in their production ‘Where does it hurt?’: their participatory performance is a “massage performance” in which they thematize issues of care, vulnerability and virtuosity/expertise, while two spectators receive a treatment combining Swedish and Thai massage techniques as well as object theatre elements.

The performative framework also includes a public interview, where the treated participants can share where and what hurts them – not only within the boundaries of their own body, but also on a larger societal level.
The creators also want to emphasize the community dimension of the project, since in the role of the massage recipient there will be not a performer, and maybe not even a regular cultural consumer, but people who either cannot afford such treatments or who are keen to share their views in this irregular context.

Eszter Mórocz is a new circus artist and dancer, a regular contributor to the works of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and works with, among others, Márta Ladjánszki and the Commandarte company. Kinga Szemessy, as a member of the SVUNG Research Group and the Association for Somatic Education and Movement, has long been researching participatory art forms both at the creative and doctoral research level.
